This is a headache associated with fever, stiff neck, light sensitivity, nausea and/or vomiting, new neurological symptoms, confusion and/or altered mentation. It is caused by a viral or bacterial infection that has entered the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The location of the headache can be variable, but most often involves the whole head, or focused towards the back of the head and neck.
