Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is often described as sharp, stabbing, electrical pain deep in the ear, and in the back of the throat, especially with swallowing. Geniculate neuralgia (nervus intermedius neuralgia) is also deep in the ear, but lacks the pain in the back of the throat. In addition, there is often some additional discomfort on the same side of the ear pain behind the ear or in the back of the head for some patients.
